Iran fortifies Kharg Island against US threat

Iran has spent months strengthening its defenses on Kharg Island amid growing tensions and repeated threats of possible U.S. military action.

Axar.az reports, citing CNN, in March that following earlier U.S. strikes on the island, Iranian forces significantly increased their military preparedness, including the deployment of additional personnel and expanded air defense systems.

According to the report, Iran has also positioned more shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile systems, known as MANPADS, to improve its short-range defensive capabilities. In addition, anti-personnel and anti-armor mines have been laid across parts of the island, including shoreline areas that could be vulnerable in the event of a landing operation.

Kharg Island is a critical energy hub for Iran, responsible for handling roughly 90% of the country’s crude oil exports.

U.S. officials and military analysts have warned that any potential operation to seize the island would carry significant risks, including the possibility of substantial casualties.
