A U.S. judge has scheduled the trial of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, to begin on June 1, 2027, in a federal drug trafficking case.
Axar.az reports, citing foreign media, that the trial date was set on Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein during a hearing in Manhattan federal court.
Maduro's defense attorney said he would seek to have the case dismissed, arguing that Maduro is immune from prosecution as the head of a sovereign state.
Maduro and Flores, both dressed in beige prison uniforms, appeared in court during the approximately 20-minute hearing, marking one of the most high-profile criminal proceedings in recent U.S. history.
