Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has thanked countries that offered condolences and assistance following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu Island.

Azerbaijan was among the countries that Takaichi expressed gratitude for their support.

"I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for the warm messages of sympathy and solidarity we have received from people around the world, including the leaders of a number of countries, following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake," the prime minister stated on her X account.

"I would also like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the offers of support we have received from numerous countries and international organizations so far," she added.

Takaichi expressed her appreciation to 56 countries, including Azerbaijan, and seven international organizations.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu on July 28. The quake caused damage and power outages, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later lifted. According to the latest information, 34 people were killed in the earthquake.
