Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has frozen the dispatch of Italy’s 13th military aid package to Ukraine while awaiting the results of the US midterm elections.
Axar.az reports, citing Il Giornale d'Italia, that the next shipment is fully prepared, but its delivery schedule has yet to be approved. The last shipment of Italian weapons arrived in Ukraine 10 months ago.
The delivery has been postponed several times. Initially, the delay was attributed to a shift from July to September, then to the need to wait for the League party congress. The shipment is now on hold until after the US midterm elections.
“The US political calendar has thus become the new point of reference in this period of waiting in Italy. However, it remains unclear which election results could prompt a decision, and there is no indication that the aid will be dispatched immediately after the vote,” the publication reported.
According to the outlet, the repeated delays are causing tensions within Palazzo Chigi, the Italian prime minister’s office, and putting at risk commitments Meloni made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Italian government continues to state publicly that its support for Ukraine will continue, but has not provided a delivery date or specified what is preventing the package from being sent.
