Donald Trump's team has informed European officials that the new U.S. president plans to continue military aid to Ukraine.
Axar.az reports this based on an article by the Financial Times.
The publication notes that during his campaign, Trump promised to cut aid to Ukraine and compel Kyiv to begin immediate peace negotiations. However, now he intends to continue supplying American weapons to Kyiv after his inauguration. This information was confirmed to the publication by three individuals familiar with the discussions.
At the same time, Trump plans to demand that NATO allies more than double their defense spending. Currently, the target is 2% of GDP (only 23 out of the alliance's 32 members meet this standard), but Trump wants to raise this figure to 5%.
One of the publication's sources indicated that Trump might settle for 3.5% of GDP and plans to explicitly link increased defense spending with offering more favorable trade terms with the US.
