Taiwan’s defense ministry responded to recent Chinese comments by asserting that history, particularly the outcomes of World War Two, demonstrates that aggression and expansion ultimately lead to failure.
Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that this follows remarks by China's defense ministry, which claimed Taiwan would eventually come under Beijing’s control, comparing the island to a mantis attempting to stop a chariot.
Taiwan’s ministry criticized China's escalating military actions, which it claims are destabilizing the region and turning China into a major international "troublemaker."
The ministry emphasized that the lessons of World War Two show that aggression leads to defeat, and Taiwan is strengthening its military to safeguard its sovereignty, freedom, and democracy.
Taiwan rejected Beijing's sovereignty claims, stating that only the Taiwanese people can decide their future.
The comments come amid heightened tensions over China’s military activities near Taiwan, and Taiwan’s government pointed to the historical context of World War Two, during which Taiwan was a Japanese colony, and the Chinese republican government fled to Taiwan after losing to the Communists in 1949. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te also reaffirmed Taiwan’s stance, calling China’s ongoing threats the greatest danger to Taiwan’s sovereignty and democracy.
