Amil Salimov, an Azerbaijani member of the Latvian Parliament, stated during his speech that he takes pride in his national identity.

Axar.az reports that his speech was widely shared on social media.

The deputy emphasized that he is proud to speak both Azerbaijani and Turkish and wishes to make use of these language skills.

He said, "I am proud to be Azerbaijani!" in Azerbaijani, then translated the words into the state language:

"So, what should I do now? Let's say the ambassador of Azerbaijan or Turkiye comes to us, should I not speak to them in their language?. I can speak both Turkish and Azerbaijani, and I am proud of it. These languages are important, they are widely spoken. I want to use my knowledge. Now, if my parents call me, should I not speak with them in Azerbaijani? Thank you!"

It should be noted that Amil Salimov's speech was in response to proposals by nationalists about speaking only Latvian in the parliament building.

Amil Salimov also posted about this on his social media. He stated that this proposal does not align with the principles of democracy:

"I am not going to flee parliament when those who don't speak Latvian call me. And I will not betray my identity!"
