Armenia cannot be in both the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU) at the same time, and it must decide where it belongs.
Axar.az reports according to Russian media, this statement was made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin.
"We are convinced that it is impossible to be part of two opposing blocs like the EAEU and the European Union at the same time," Galuzin said.
According to the deputy minister, the EAEU is an alliance of equal states, whereas the EU is a structure governed by “strict discipline” imposed by Brussels bureaucrats who are detached from reality and driven by anti-Russian narratives.
“It is up to official Yerevan to decide where it wants to be. We hope that Armenian society will be informed of all the benefits of EAEU membership and the scale of losses that would come with leaving it so that they can have an objective understanding of reality,” Galuzin stated.
He added that Armenia is a sovereign state that independently determines its course of development.
Galuzin also noted that Russia and Armenia discuss all pressing issues in an open atmosphere.
"We are allies and strategic partners with Armenia. That’s why we discuss all key issues of our agenda with honesty and trust," he said.
On March 26, the Armenian parliament passed a bill in its second and final reading declaring the country’s intention to join the European Union.
Later, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk stated that Yerevan would have to choose between the EAEU and the EU, as “it is impossible to sit on two chairs at once.”
