Russia's use of Sukhumi airport is a violation of sovereignty.

Axar.az reports that this is stated in a statement by the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

The official Tbilisi expressed serious concern over Russia's illegal use of Sukhumi airport located in the occupied region of Abkhazia and the restoration of air transport in the region.

According to the ministry, the flight to Sukhumi airport by a Russian airline on May 1, 2025 and the agreement signed with the so-called regime on the operation of the airport are a gross violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as fundamental norms and principles of international law, including the UN Charter and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Convention.

The statement notes that the implementation of railway transportation from Russia to Abkhazia on the same date also raises concerns.

"The Georgian Foreign Ministry continues to activate international mechanisms on this issue. It demands that the international community adequately respond to Russia's illegal actions against Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Georgia also calls on the Russian Federation to comply with the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008," the ministry's statement emphasizes.
