U.S. President Donald Trump has brushed off ethical concerns over a $400 million luxury airplane offered as a gift by the Qatari royal family, calling it “stupid” to reject such a gesture.
Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that the jet, intended to be used as Air Force One, would rank among the most expensive gifts ever received by the U.S. government.
The announcement sparked swift backlash from Democrats and government ethics advocates, who warned the gift could pose a serious conflict of interest and potentially influence presidential decision-making.
Trump said the Boeing 747-8 airplane would eventually be donated to his presidential library - a repository housing research materials from his administration - and that he had no plans to use it for personal reasons after leaving office.
"I think it's a great gesture from Qatar. I appreciate it very much. I would never be one to turn down that kind of an offer," Trump told reporters at the White House before leaving for a trip to the Middle East.
