Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S., Yechiel Leiter, warned that Israel is planning operations against Iran that will make past covert missions, such as last year’s deadly “beeper and walkie-talkie” attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, appear “simple.” In a Tuesday interview with Merit Street TV, Leiter said that surprises are expected Thursday and Friday, hinting at intensified strikes or covert actions against Iranian targets.
Axar.az, citing Fox News, reports that the 2024 operations he referenced involved remote detonation of communication devices used by Hezbollah, killing dozens and wounding thousands. Though Israel later admitted responsibility, the U.S. distanced itself, with then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating Washington had no prior knowledge.
Speaking from outside the Situation Room at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., Leiter said Israel is systematically dismantling Iran’s missile infrastructure, claiming up to half of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile systems have been destroyed. He confirmed Israel had recently struck a broadcast center in central Tehran, emphasizing that civilians were warned to evacuate beforehand.
Leiter clarified that Israel is not pursuing regime change, but is focused on neutralizing the Iranian threat posed by its nuclear and missile programs. He acknowledged, however, that if the Iranian people bring about regime change themselves, Israel’s indirect role could be seen positively in hindsight.
He added that Israel’s economy and stock market remain strong despite the ongoing war and that efforts are being made to assist Israeli citizens abroad and coordinate with neighboring countries to support movement and reinforcements.
