A significant breakthrough has been achieved in the field of organ donation and transplantation in Azerbaijan.
Axar.az reports that, the Ministry of Health has announced that, for the first time in the country’s medical history, organ transplants have been successfully performed using organs from a deceased donor.
The Organ Donation and Transplantation Coordination Center, operating under the Ministry of Health, received a report from the Clinical Medical Center regarding a patient diagnosed with brain death. Following the necessary medical assessments and coordination efforts, the donor’s family gave consent for organ transplantation.
A liver transplant was carried out at the Central Customs Hospital by a medical team led by Dr. Mirjalal Kazimi. The recipient, Manzar Yashar gizi Sharifova, born on October 12, 2002, had been suffering from liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis B and D and did not have a living donor.
Additionally, corneal transplants were performed at the National Ophthalmology Center named after Academician Zarifa Aliyeva. A surgical team led by Dr. Jamil Hasanov successfully transplanted the corneas to two recipients from Zagatala and Fuzuli.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that these procedures mark a historic first, not only for Azerbaijan but also for the entire Caucasus region, representing a major step forward in the country’s medical capabilities.
