The “Mecca Pact” on joint defense signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan has caused concern in Greece.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that an article published by Greece’s Kathimerini newspaper said the agreement signals a fundamental change in the principles of the security architecture in the Middle East for Athens.

The newspaper wrote that Athens is mainly concerned that the agreement could strengthen Turkiye’s position and that Egypt could also join the pact.

It noted that the agreement did not emerge suddenly:

“This is the result of Ankara’s diplomatic steps in the region. As a result, Turkiye could begin joint defense production with Saudi Arabia.”

The article said one of the negative consequences of the agreement for Greece could be the cancellation of plans related to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
