U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on his election win and the two agreed to meet soon to discuss future cooperation.

Axar.az reports that Carney’s Liberals are projected to win a minority government with 169 seats, three short of a majority, meaning he must rely on support from other parties like the NDP and Bloc Québécois to govern.

Trump’s trade policies heavily influenced the election, and economic negotiations with the U.S. will be a top priority.

Bloc leader Blanchet called for political stability during trade talks, while Trump’s deputy press secretary controversially joked about making Canada the 51st U.S. state—something Carney firmly rejected.

Carney, a former central banker, took over from Justin Trudeau and has pledged action on housing, tax reform, and preparing for the upcoming G7 summit. The Conservatives will form the opposition with 144 seats. Both NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre lost their seats, with Singh announcing his resignation. Voter turnout was 67%.
