An asteroid known as Apophis (named after the Egyptian deity of chaos) is set to make a close, but safe, flyby of Earth on April 13, 2029.
Axar.az reports, citing NASA, the asteroid will pass at a distance of about 20,000 miles (32,000 kilometers) from Earth’s surface—closer than some geosynchronous satellites but with no risk of impact.
NASA confirms that there is no danger of Apophis colliding with Earth for at least the next 100 years.
Apophis is classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid due to its size, which is about 1,115 feet (340 meters) in diameter—roughly the length of more than three football fields. However, scientists emphasize that its 2029 flyby is safe and represents a rare scientific opportunity rather than a threat.
