New Bone Marrow Transplant Center opens in Baku

On December 11, the opening ceremony of the Bone Marrow Transplant Center was held at Liv Bona Dea Hospital.

Axar.az reports that the opening ceremony was attended by Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and Minister of Health Teymur Musayev.

Leyla Aliyeva first visited a minor receiving treatment at the hospital under the auspices of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, inquired about his health, and presented a gift.

Then the opening of the Bone Marrow Transplant Center took place.

The new center will perform bone marrow transplants for both adults and children. It was reported that the center has 6 special isolated wards. This infrastructure allows for the admission and treatment of 80 patients per year.

It was noted that currently, an 8-bed hematology department is also at the disposal of patients within the hospital. All wards in the department are equipped with a modern HEPA filtration positive pressure system, which ensures maximum protection of patients from infections. The preparation of chemotherapy drugs is carried out in biosafety cabinets, and cell collection is carried out in an independent apheresis unit.

At the same time, the Blood Bank has the ability to prepare erythrocytes, platelets, plasma, and other components, including obtaining a granulocyte suspension. For the safety of transplant patients, "irradiation" and filtering procedures are regularly applied.

It should be noted that the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center was opened under a license issued in accordance with the Resolution on Amendments to the "List of Specialized Medical Institutions Performing Donor Organ Transplantation", approved by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers dated August 20, 2021.

It should be noted that bone marrow and stem cell transplantation is a modern and effective medical procedure used in the treatment of various hematological and oncological diseases. Stem cells are obtained from the patient himself (autologous) or from a donor (allogeneic) and transplanted into the body after high-dose chemotherapy. The goal is to replace the diseased bone marrow with healthy cells and restore blood production.
