Weak geomagnetic storm hits Earth

A fast solar wind stream from a coronal hole reached Earth on April 18, triggering a weak geomagnetic storm.

Axar.az informs that the information was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“As expected, a geomagnetic storm has begun on Earth. The current level is G1, which is the minimum on a five-point scale. The overall period of unstable geomagnetic conditions may be quite significant — from five to seven days — but the main active phase is expected to last only the first one to two days, covering the weekend,” the report said.

In previous days, it was forecast that a geomagnetic storm would begin due to a fast solar wind stream. The storm could intensify up to the G2 level, but is not expected to exceed it.
