Armenia detains battalion chief over soldier’s death

The chief of staff of a battalion has been detained in connection with the death of a conscript soldier near Chambarak, Armenia.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenian media, that the incident was preceded by an argument among servicemen in the dining hall, after which the officer decided to make them run as a “disciplinary” measure.

During the run in the dark, the soldiers were hit by a dilapidated truck without headlights, driven by a contract soldier who did not have a driver’s license. As a result, 19-year-old Suren Vardanyan was killed.
