Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said servicemen were not provided with necessary equipment, including marine life jackets, during recent military exercises.

Axar.az reports, citing Akorda, that Tokayev said the incident exposed shortcomings in the organization, supply, and safety measures during the exercises.

A government commission has been tasked with assessing the actions of officials responsible for preparing and conducting the exercises, supplying equipment and ensuring compliance with safety requirements.

Tokayev also ordered a comprehensive inspection of the Defense Ministry covering military service organization, supplies, and the material and financial support of the armed forces. The commission is expected to identify violations and determine those responsible.

“This tragic incident has clearly exposed numerous shortcomings and a lack of professionalism in the army. The time has come for fundamental military reform. This is an urgent task,” Tokayev said.
