Caspian Sea level could drop sharply by mid-century

The water level of the Caspian Sea could drop by 8–21 meters by the middle of the century.

Axar.az informs that this was stated by Mahir Aliyev, coordinator of the Tehran Convention Secretariat, at the Regional Environment Summit in Astana.

He said that solving the problem requires the long-term cooperation of the five Caspian littoral states — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Inger Andersen also called on countries to develop a joint 2026–2036 action plan covering scientific monitoring, climate change adaptation, and protection of the Caspian ecosystem.
