Azerbaijan claims U20 wrestling gold

Azerbaijani wrestler Haji Karimov has won a gold medal at the U20 European Wrestling Championships in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.

Axar.az reports according to the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation, the first freestyle wrestling medalists were determined on the sixth day of competition.

Mohammad Ismayilov (57 kg) claimed the bronze medal after defeating France's Gaspard Chenut by technical superiority (11-0), while Bashir Verdiyev (65 kg) secured bronze with a dominant 12-1 victory over Hungary's Mozes Laszlo.

In the 70 kg final, Haji Karimov faced France's Baissangour Bitmurzayev. Giving his opponent no chance, the Azerbaijani wrestler claimed a 10-0 technical superiority victory to become the U20 European champion.

Eljan Ismayilzade (79 kg) recorded dominant wins over Spain's David Kodakov (11-0) and Ireland's Declan Bly (10-0) in the repechage. However, despite leading 10-4 in the bronze medal match against Armenia's Narek Nikoghosyan, he was pinned and finished without a medal.

Farhad Suleymanli (97 kg) defeated Finland's Joona Junnila 4-1 to claim the bronze medal.
