The UN has announced that nearly 850 people have been executed in Iran since the beginning of this year, expressing concern over the systematic use of the death penalty as a tool of state repression and intimidation.
Axar.az reports that this was stated in a statement by the United Nations Human Rights Office.
The statement released today announced that the number of executions in Iran increased significantly in the first half of 2025.
"The Iranian authorities executed at least 841 people from the beginning of the year to August 28, 2025. Given the lack of transparency, the real figures may be different and higher," UN Human Rights Office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.
He noted that in July alone, the Iranian government executed at least 110 people, more than double the number of executions in the same period in 2024:
“The high number of executions reflects a systematic pattern of the use of the death penalty as a tool of state repression and intimidation, disproportionately targeting ethnic minorities and migrants.”
