At the UN General Assembly, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa condemned ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Syria but emphasized that Damascus is committed to dialogue and to the 1974 disengagement agreement with Israel.
Axar.az, citing Times of Israel, reports that in his first UN speech since 1967, Sharaa called for an end to sanctions on Syria and highlighted the country’s suffering under the ousted Assad regime, framing his government as seeking justice, peace, and national reconstruction.
Sharaa expressed solidarity with Gaza, urged an immediate halt to regional conflict, and reiterated Syria’s efforts to uproot sectarianism and rebuild institutions. Israel confirmed ongoing security negotiations with Syria, stressing protections for the Druze minority and southwestern demilitarization. Sharaa thanked nations supporting Syria, including Turkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the US, and the EU, and positioned Syria as a country moving from being a “crisis exporter” to a “peace opportunity” in the region.
