Turkiye uses the border issue as diplomatic leverage

Although Turkiye recognized the South Caucasus republics in 1991, it has not established diplomatic relations with Armenia.

Axar.az reports that this was stated by Turkish political commentator Hasan Oktay.

“The Kalbajar region occupied by Armenia (Kalbajar was occupied on April 2, 1993 - ed.) caused Turkiye to close its borders. Since Kalbajar was liberated from occupation after the November 10, 2020, Statement, there is no legal obstacle to opening the borders. However, Ankara is using this issue as a diplomatic tool towards signing a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan,” the political scientist noted.
