Pope urges Turkiye to act as a global mediator

Pope Leo XIV has called on Turkiye to assume the role of mediator between nations.

Axar.az reports that the Pope addressed government representatives and diplomats in Ankara during his four-day visit:

"Mr. President, Turkiye is a country that serves lasting peace, stability, and solidarity between peoples. Today, more than ever, we need people who will promote dialogue and carry it out with firm will and patient determination."

The Pope also expressed his concern about the increasing level of conflicts at the global level.

According to the Pope, Turkiye plays the role of a bridge between East and West, Asia and Europe, and is also a country rich in internal diversity:

"You occupy an important place in the present and future of the Mediterranean and the whole world. This comes primarily from the fact that you value your internal diversity. Society can survive when it has pluralism. Christians want to make a positive contribution to the unity of your country. They are part of the Turkish identity."

The leader of the world's Catholics also said that in a society like Turkiye, where religion plays an important role, the dignity and freedom of every person must be respected:

"We are all children of God, and this has personal, social, and political consequences. Today, this is a serious challenge that must change domestic politics and international relations."
