Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed what he called “new ideas” on ending the war after nearly an hour-long talk with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Axar.az, citing BBC, reports that he said the discussions covered new formats, meetings, and timelines for advancing peace and hinted at another meeting with US President Donald Trump soon.
The talks follow an agreement on an updated 20-point peace plan between US and Ukrainian negotiators. Unlike earlier drafts seen as favouring Russia, the revised proposal includes potential security guarantees from the US, NATO, and European partners, as well as a coordinated response if Russia invades again. It also discusses possible troop withdrawals in eastern Ukraine, a demilitarized zone, and the idea of a free economic zone in Donetsk, while keeping Ukrainian policing in any vacated areas.
Despite diplomatic progress, major disagreements remain, particularly over the Donbas, which Russia largely controls and seeks to have fully ceded. Zelensky continues to reject territorial concessions without firm security guarantees. Meanwhile, Russia says it is reviewing the proposals, and fighting continues, with Ukraine striking a key Russian oil refinery and Russia advancing in parts of Donetsk.
