Iran prosecutor threatens protesters with death penalty

Iran’s Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad has threatened participants of the mass protests that have been ongoing in the country for two weeks with the death penalty.

Axar.az reports that the prosecutor general described the protesters as “enemies of God.”

“All protesters are accused of being ‘enemies of God’ (‘mohareb’). This crime carries the death penalty. It will be applied to rioters who damage property and disrupt security, terrorists, as well as those who assist them,” he said.

He also added that prosecutors should prepare court cases quickly and show no mercy or leniency.

Earlier, Tehran Prosecutor Ali Salehi had also stated that protesters could face charges of “mohareb.”
