Venezuela rejects US sanctions extension, urges cooperation

The government of Venezuela has strongly rejected the extension of U.S. sanctions tied to the “national emergency” declaration first issued under Executive Order 13692 in 2015 and most recently continued by the United States in February 2026.

Axar.az reports, citing Venezuelan FM Ivan Gil Pinto Telegram channel, that Caracas described the renewal of the measure as unfounded, saying the characterization of Venezuela as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security is inaccurate and unjustified.

In an official statement, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto denounced the policy as outdated and counterproductive, urging Washington to abandon unilateral approaches, engage in respectful dialogue, and work toward reciprocal respect, sovereignty, and mutually beneficial relations that reflect historical, cultural, and human ties between the two nations.

Caracas also emphasized that it does not pose a threat to the U.S. government or people.

The diplomatic dispute unfolds against the backdrop of longstanding U.S.–Venezuela tensions, shaped by sanctions and political disagreements that have persisted for more than a decade.
