German Chancellor Merz set to meet Trump in Washington

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington in the coming days to discuss the United States’ tariff policy. The visit follows Trump’s announcement of a 10% global tariff on imports to the U.S., a move Merz aims to address collaboratively with the European Union.

Axar.az, citing Die WELT, reports Merz told ARD that he will travel to Washington with a unified European position, emphasizing that trade and tariff matters are the responsibility of the EU as a whole, not individual member states.

He stressed the importance of prior coordination within the EU before engaging with the U.S. on this issue.

The trip had been planned for some time but was only now formally confirmed. Merz had previously visited Trump in the White House in June 2025, marking his first and so far only meeting with the former U.S. president.
