Germany’s Merz skeptical of US peace plans for Ukraine

Ahead of talks in London, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed doubts over details of U.S.-led peace proposals for Ukraine, stressing the need for European scrutiny.

Axar.az, citing Politico, reports that the meeting at Downing Street brought together Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to discuss Kyiv’s future nearly four years after Russia’s invasion.

The leaders emphasized unity and coordinated support for Ukraine, including ramping up economic pressure on Russia and exploring the use of frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine’s budget shortfall. Key disagreements remain over Western security guarantees and Russia’s territorial claims, while Zelenskyy highlighted the need for clarity on Donbas and assurances against renewed aggression.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky for not reviewing the U.S. proposal, suggesting Russia is reportedly amenable and hinting he might withdraw support if peace isn’t reached.

European leaders pledged continued coordination and planning for Ukraine’s reconstruction and security.
