13 killed in Pakistan strikes in Afghanistan, UN says

Pakistani airstrikes struck multiple districts in eastern Afghanistan overnight on 21–22 February 2026, including Behsud and Khogyani in Nangarhar province and Barmal and Urgun in Paktika province.

Axar.az reports that according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), at least 13 civilians, including women and children, were killed and seven others injured, while additional strikes damaged a madrassa, a mosque, and a private residence.

Pakistan stated the operations targeted camps of the Pakistani Taliban and Islamic State Khorasan Province, which it claimed were responsible for recent attacks inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan condemned the strikes as violations of sovereignty and international law, summoned Pakistan’s ambassador, and warned of a future response.

UNAMA called on all parties to end hostilities and adhere to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution to protect civilians.

The attacks heighten tensions along the 2,600‑km border amid months of clashes and follow recent efforts, including a Saudi-mediated soldier exchange, to ease cross-border friction.
