Armenia to replace Russian guards at Akhurik checkpoint

Armenian authorities plan to remove Russian border guards from the Akhurik checkpoint on the Armenia–Turkiye border in the near future.

Axar.az, citing Armenian media, reports that the decision to transfer control of the checkpoint to Armenian border guards has already been made, and preparations are reportedly underway.

However, Russian guards are expected to remain present at the site for now.

The development comes amid signs of possible progress toward reopening the Armenian–Turkish border.

Turkiye has begun construction work on its side of the Margara checkpoint, and Armenia is assessing the condition of the railway connection to Turkiye.
