The head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, said the state corporation does not intend to halt construction of the second and third units at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant or leave Iran.
Axar.az reports, citing Russian media, Likhachev told the industry publication Strana Rosatom that “The construction itself — the second and third units — remains among the corporation’s priorities. It is certainly not the time to leave.”
Likhachev also said he believes the conflict will be prolonged.
“If we look at the situation based on what lies on the surface, the conflict will be long-lasting — and it will fundamentally affect the global economy, global logistics, and global public opinion,” Likhachev said.
The first power unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, with a capacity of 1,000 MW, was handed over to the Iranian customer in 2013. Construction of the second phase — units II and III with a combined capacity of 2.1 GW — began in 2016.
Work on Unit II had been scheduled for completion in 2024, and Unit III in 2026.
In late February 2025, Likhachev said a site had been selected in Iran for another nuclear power plant of Russian design, though construction there is still far off.
