Chinese scientists discover two new lunar minerals

Chinese scientists have discovered two new lunar minerals from samples brought back by the Chang’e-5 mission, marking a further breakthrough in lunar research.

Axar.az informs, citing Xinhua, according to Chinese space authorities, the newly identified minerals—magnesiochangesite-(Y) and changesite-(Ce)—have been officially approved by the International Mineralogical Association.

The discoveries add to the first Chang’e-5 mineral find in 2022 and bring the total number of known new lunar minerals worldwide to eight.

Scientists say the minerals were identified in extremely small lunar soil particles and show unique chemical features linked to the Moon’s geological evolution.

The findings were announced during China’s 2026 Space Day events in Chengdu.
