EU countries could reach an agreement on sanctions against violent settlers in the West Bank on Monday.
Axar.az reports, according to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, EU ministers are expected to advance work on listing violent settlers as part of a broader sanctions package.
She said she hopes the bloc will be able to move the process forward, although it remains unclear whether there is sufficient support among member states to adopt the measures under the required voting rules. She also noted that shifts in political positions within EU member states could influence progress on the file.
“I expect political agreement on the sanctions of violent settlers,” Kallas said ahead of the meeting. “I really do hope that we have a political agreement regarding the violent settler sanctions that has been on the table for quite some time.”
“There are proposals put forward by the member states,” she added. “Let’s see whether member states are willing to move there.”
The issue concerns potential EU-level restrictive measures targeting individuals involved in settler violence in the West Bank, as part of wider discussions on Middle East policy within the bloc.
