EU to hold first migration talks with Taliban

The European Union is planning its first meeting in Brussels with representatives of the Taliban to discuss migration and deportation issues.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that the talks will focus on the return of Afghan migrants considered security threats by EU member states.

According to Markus Lammert, the meeting is being coordinated with Sweden at the request of several EU countries, although no date has yet been set.

The focus is on the return of people "who pose a security threat,” Lammert said, stressing that the planned technical-level meeting would not imply EU recognition of the Taliban government.

The report notes that human rights organizations have criticized the initiative, warning that deportations to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan could expose returnees to persecution and abuse.
