CHP reelects Ozgur Ozel as parliamentary group chair

Turkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has reelected Ozgur Ozel as its parliamentary group chairman amid ongoing legal uncertainty over the party’s 2023 congress.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that Ozel was backed by 95 of 96 lawmakers at a closed parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday, with one vote declared invalid.

CHP sources described the vote as a “renewal of confidence within the parliamentary group.”

The result will become official after it is submitted to the Parliament Speaker’s Office.

Party officials said the election was repeated as a precaution following a court ruling annulling the 2023 congress, in order to avoid possible legal complications regarding Ozel’s status.

It should be noted that an Ankara court previously annulled the results of CHP’s 38th congress held on November 4–5, 2023. Following the ruling, Ozel was removed from his position as party leader, and former CHP chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu was temporarily reinstated until the decision becomes final.
