Kyrgyzstan wins first-ever seat on UN Security Council

Kyrgyzstan has been elected to the UN Security Council for the first time in its history, securing the Asia-Pacific seat for a two-year term beginning on January 1, 2027.

Axar.az reports, citing the UN, the Central Asian nation defeated the Philippines after four rounds of voting in the 193-member UN General Assembly, ultimately winning by 142 votes to 49.

Kyrgyzstan, which joined the United Nations in 1992, celebrated the historic milestone alongside the election of Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe as non-permanent members of the 15-member Security Council.

The five countries will serve on the Council through the end of 2028, replacing outgoing members whose terms expire on December 31, 2026.
