11 climbers killed in avalanche in Russia

Eleven climbers were killed after an avalanche came down from Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria.

Axar.az reports, citing Russian media, that according to the regional branch of Russia’s Emergencies Ministry, the fate of another six climbers remains unknown. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

“According to updated information, 10 people descended on their own, while six climbers were injured and taken to medical facilities. Unfortunately, 11 people sustained injuries incompatible with life,” the statement said.

The emergency agency said there were a total of 33 people in the group.
