Spain’s Prime Minister’s wife ordered to stand trial

A Madrid court has ruled that there is enough evidence for Begona Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to face trial over alleged corruption-related offenses.

Axar.az reports, citing DW, that Gomez, a university director, is accused of using her position as the prime minister’s wife to help secure business contracts.

The court ordered her to surrender her passport, banned her from leaving Spain, and required her to report to authorities twice a month.

The investigation, which began in 2024, focuses on allegations involving Gomez’s role at Madrid’s Complutense University and claims that she used public resources and personal connections for private benefit.

She has denied all accusations.

Sanchez’s Socialist Party said Gomez has been the target of political and judicial persecution, while the prime minister has rejected calls to resign.

The case adds further pressure on Sanchez’s minority government, which is already facing investigations involving several political allies over separate corruption allegations.
