US Supreme Court blocks Trump's bid to end birthright order

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down President Donald Trump's executive order limiting birthright citizenship, ruling 6-3 that it violated the Constitution.

Axar.az reports, citing NBC, that, writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said there was "scant evidence" supporting the administration's interpretation of the 14th Amendment.

"Citizenship then and now, was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community," Roberts wrote. Referring to the amendment adopted after the Civil War, he added: "We keep that promise today."

Trump's Jan. 20, 2025 executive order sought to deny automatic citizenship to children born in the United States unless at least one parent was a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Following the ruling, Trump urged Congress to pass legislation ending birthright citizenship.

"No long and unwieldy Constitutional Amendment is necessary! Congress should start TODAY to work on ending expensive and unfair to our Country, Birthright Citizenship," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "They will have my Complete and Total Support!"
