Netanyahu presented Trump with Iran options

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not advocate a specific course of action toward Iran during his July 28 meeting with US President Donald Trump, instead presenting the three main scenarios facing the two countries.

Axar.az reports, citing The Times of Israel, that a senior Israeli official said Wednesday that the Oval Office meeting was an “exchange of ideas” covering three possibilities:

1- reaching a diplomatic agreement with Iran;

2- continuing economic pressure and sanctions if no agreement is reached, without returning to war;

3- launching a major new military offensive against Iran.

The official said Netanyahu did not tell Trump which option Israel preferred, seeking to counter reports that the prime minister had traveled to Washington primarily to persuade the US president to resume military strikes against Iran.

Netanyahu did, however, express doubts about whether Iran would honor any agreement it might sign, according to the official.

“The two leaders discussed all three scenarios in detail, laying out the advantages and disadvantages of each,” the senior Israeli official said.

The official characterized the meeting as a discussion of the available options rather than an attempt by Netanyahu to persuade Trump to adopt a particular strategy.
