Fidan: US-Iran talks could end with positive outcome today

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Ankara continues to work on the issue and expressed hope that the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States would conclude with positive news today.

Axar.az reports that Fidan said the Iran-U.S. talks were also discussed during meetings in Jordan on Wednesday.

"To be honest, the issue of the Strait of Hormuz is somewhat complicated. There are many technical details involved, and Oman also has an important role to play. If you look at the map, one side of the strait belongs to Iran, the other to Oman, while the middle consists of international waters open to global navigation," he said.

Fidan noted that efforts are underway to determine the mechanism and framework under which the Strait of Hormuz would remain temporarily open.

"It is important to reach an agreement on a temporary arrangement. First, oil must continue to flow so that global oil and energy prices do not rise. Second, it should create a process that paves the way for a permanent agreement. A 60-day period is being discussed. If progress is made during those 60 days, the parties could reach a lasting agreement," he said.

Fidan added that the parties have already reached an understanding on certain principles related to the nuclear issue and other matters. He said a permanent agreement is achievable if both the United States and Iran demonstrate genuine political will, but stressed that the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, on which Türkiye continues to contribute, must be resolved first.
