Germany has expelled more than 80 Russian diplomats and deported 313 Russian citizens since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Axar.az reports, citing BILD, that the Russian diplomatic mission in Berlin has been significantly reduced since 2022, with the latest expulsion of a Russian diplomat taking place in January 2026.

Germany expelled 40 Russian diplomats in April 2022 following the discovery of the mass killings in Bucha, near Kyiv. BILD reported that many of the expelled diplomats were suspected of working as intelligence officers under diplomatic cover.

The German Foreign Ministry told BILD: “The federal government does not tolerate espionage in Germany – especially not under the guise of diplomatic status.”

Germany currently hosts three Russian diplomatic representations: the embassy in Berlin, a consulate in Bonn and an honorary consulate in Nuremberg.
