Iran’s parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has approved the general framework of a bill aimed at regulating security and transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Axar.az reports, citing Fars News, that the proposed legislation would ban vessels belonging to the US, Israel and other hostile countries from passing through the strait. Cargo linked to Israel, as well as vessels or shipments involved in actions against Iran’s allies, would also be prohibited.

Under the draft, countries and individuals deemed responsible for causing damage to Iran would be denied passage through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf until compensation is paid. Violators could face fines of up to 20% of the value of their cargo.

The bill would also require the Iranian government, in cooperation with the armed forces, to oversee navigation, monitor vessel traffic and protect the security and environment of the Persian Gulf.
