Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has appointed former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

Axar.az reports, citing Iranian media, that the announcement was made by Seyyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy head of the Iranian President’s Office for communications and information affairs.

Tabatabaei said Rezaei was appointed by a presidential decree following Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr’s resignation as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and his assumption of a new responsibility.

The 72-year-old Mohsen Rezaei is one of Iran’s prominent military and political figures. He previously served as commander of the IRGC and as a military adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader.
