6 killed in coal mine explosion in central Colombia

Six miners were killed in an explosion at a coal mine in Cucunuba, in Colombia's central department of Cundinamarca.

Axar.az reports, citing Xinhua, that Governor Jorge Emilio Rey confirmed the deaths on Friday.

"We regret to report that the six people trapped in the El Porvenir 1 mine in Cucunuba were found dead after rescue operations concluded," Rey wrote on X.

The governor said that the mine is part of a Special Reserve Area undergoing formalization and had recently been inspected by the National Mining Agency.

He said the inspection found safety issues that needed improvement and ordered the suspension of operations while an improvement plan was being implemented.

The agency will determine why personnel were carrying out material extraction activities despite the suspension, Rey said.
