An investigation has been launched into former Turkish Prime Minister and chairman of the now-defunct Future Party Ahmet Davutoglu over alleged insult to Turkish president.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into Ahmet Davutoglu over statements shared on social media that were deemed insulting to the Turkish president.

In a statement, the prosecutor’s office said it had launched an ex officio review of social media posts containing statements considered to constitute an insult against the president.

“Following the examination, an investigation has been launched against Ahmet Davutoglu, chairman of the dissolved Future Party, under Article 299/1 of the Turkish Penal Code concerning the offense of ‘insulting the president,’” the statement said.
