Armenia, Iran to set up 'Simplified Customs Corridor'

Armenia and Iran will set up a “Simplified Customs Corridor” procedure. The respective draft protocol between the two countries was approved at Thursday’s Cabinet session of the Armenian government.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenian media, the explanatory document in this regard by the State Revenue Committee of Armenia states, in particular, that the initiative to sign this agreement has been submitted by the Iranian side.

According to this jointly developed project, the customs authorities of one country, when releasing cargo destined for the neighboring country, will transfer online data to their colleagues about the goods and their senders. After that, the receiving country must inspect these cargoes in a simplified manner.

Such a procedure is planned to be applied to enterprises in respect of which the customs authorities of the two countries do not see any risks of violating customs legislation.

This simplified inspection option will be available for all means of transport, except for personal vehicles.

The use of a simplified customs corridor will reduce the time spent on cargo clearance and considerably speed up the passage of vehicles, the explanation states.

But taking into account the complete reconstruction of the building of Armenia’s Meghri checkpoint on the border with Iran, the new procedure will be possible to apply only after the completion of this reconstruction, as this checkpoint will be equipped with new service equipment only after the completion of this reconstruction.
