Timur Turlov, President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, was elected President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Axar.az reports, citing FIDE's website, that the elections were held on 26 September at the FIDE General Assembly, alongside the 46th Chess Olympiad, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Turlov won in the second round, with 110 votes. At 38, he becomes the second youngest FIDE President ever elected.

Delegates representing 196 national chess federations took part in the election, with three candidates competing in the race. In the first round, Turlov received 96 votes, Wadim Rosenstein (Germany) received 76 votes, and Jan Henric Buettner (Germany) received 20 votes. In total, 192 votes were cast.

In the second round, which followed two hours later, Turlov won by a vote of 110 to 85 (196 votes in total), becoming the eighth President of FIDE. He succeeded Arkady Dvorkovich, who served two terms as President, from 2018 to 2026.

It should be noted that 38-year-old Timur Turlov was a Russian citizen until 2022. He later renounced his Russian citizenship and acquired citizenship of Kazakhstan, as well as Saint Kitts and Nevis.
